Biography: Amb. Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Mohamoud, The Republic of Somaliland Representative in Kenya
Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Mohamoud is the current Representative of the Republic of Somaliland to the Republic of Kenya. Prior to his appointment as Kenya Representative in November 2021, Mohamoud served as a senior policy advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland (2019 – 2021).
Dr. Mohamoud possesses 20 years of professional work experience in international development cooperation, governance, peace-building, conflict resolution, policy dialogue, public policy, electoral development, election observation, democratization, gender, human rights, fragile states, and post- conflict state-building. Mohamoud worked with bilateral and multilateral institutions and the diplomatic community in general.
Dr. Mohamoud managed high-level diplomatic relations, negotiations, and international agreements amongst stakeholders at national and international levels. Over the period, he practiced a career in diplomacy and successfully engaged in negotiations with a number of international bilateral and multilateral institutions.
Dr. Mohamoud was representing the Somaliland government in the international community negotiations, and meetings on the development of the Partnership Framework for Somaliland endorsed on 17th February 2022. Dr. Mohamoud also played a major role in strengthening and further cementing the bilateral and multilateral relations between Somaliland and the international community.
Dr. Mohamoud was working in the field of civil society/non-state actors for nearly two decades and he held various executive positions as the Executive Director of Somaliland Non-State Actors (SONSAF) and Executive Director of Somaliland National Youth Umbrella (SONYO). Dr. Mohamoud also took a leading role in Somaliland’s civil society to participate in and influence the state-building and democratization process by promoting inclusive politics, women political participation, and electoral reforms.
Dr. Mohamoud Ph.D. thesis has addressed some complex issues of Somaliland state-building: Understanding the Interplay of Three Trajectories: Democracy, Clan, and Islam in the State Building Process of Somaliland.
Mohamoud holds a Ph.D. in political science from the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE), a Master of MA degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Hargeisa, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, and a Postgraduate Diploma of Peace and, Conflict Studies from Hargeysa University.
